Affordable Doesn't Have to Mean Basic: The Role of Beauty in Affordable Housing Projects

If you're like most people, you hear the term 'affordable housing' and probably picture something utilitarian: bare-bones, uninspired, builder-grade, or even run-down.
But at Community Catalysts, we’re passionate about rewriting that narrative. We want to demonstrate that 'affordable' doesn’t have to mean 'basic'; it can mean warm, inviting, beautiful, and, most importantly, a place people are proud to call home.
We all know that in Livingston County, the need for attainable and transitional housing is growing. But just meeting that need with quantity isn’t enough. We believe quality matters, too. That’s why Community Catalysts' approach to housing renovation centers on aesthetics, comfort, and dignity, making sure that every person we serve experiences not just shelter, but sanctuary.
Welcome to Bethel Suites: A New Standard for Transitional Housing
Our flagship transitional housing project, Bethel Suites, is a fantastic example of what’s possible when design AND compassion work hand in hand.
Located in Livingston County, Bethel Suites offers transitional housing that feels more like a boutique hotel than a shelter. With clean, modern finishes, serene color palettes, hand-painted murals and comfortable communal spaces, Bethel Suites is redefining expectations of what affordable housing can look (and feel) like.
From the moment residents walk through the doors, they’re welcomed into a space that was designed with care, not just functionality. Every element, from lighting to furniture to layout, was hand-selected to promote a sense of comfort, safety, and well-being.
So, Why Does Design Matter in Affordable Housing?
A thoughtful, well-designed space can transform lives. Studies show environments that are clean, aesthetically pleasing, and thoughtfully organized contribute to lower stress levels, better mental health, and a stronger sense of belonging. And for individuals and families in transitional housing, these benefits are crucial.
Design also communicates something important: You matter. Your comfort matters. Your experience matters. At Community Catalysts, we want our residents to feel seen and valued. A space that feels warm and dignified reinforces those values, day in and day out.
Thoughtful Choices = Lasting Impact
Designing attainable housing that people love doesn’t have to break the bank. It’s about intentional choices, like:
Natural light and soothing colors to create a calming environment.
Durable, quality materials that stand the test of time.
Welcoming common areas that foster community and connection.
Private spaces that offer peace and both physical and emotional security.
At Bethel Suites, we’ve implemented these principles, and the results have spoken for themselves. Our guests have access to thoughtfully designed living spaces that feel like home, not just temporary shelter or motel. We're proud to say that this environment supports healing, stability, and hope as they transition into long-term housing solutions beyond Bethel Suites.
Moving Beyond “Doing the Bare Minimum” Thinking
It’s time to move past the idea that affordable housing has to be minimal, stark, or impersonal. We believe everyone deserves a space that reflects their dignity and worth, regardless of their income or current circumstance.
In Livingston County, Community Catalysts is proud to be leading this shift by creating housing solutions that are both affordable and aspirational. Our work at Bethel Suites proves that designing homes people love to live in is not only possible—it’s essential.
