For families and individuals experiencing homelessness, receiving the keys to a stable home is a powerful, unforgettable milestone. But the journey to long-term stability doesn’t start (or end) with housing alone.

It begins with something deeper: human connection.

At Community Catalysts, we see this every day at Bethel Suites.

Bethel Suites is a place where people begin rebuilding their lives, often after experiencing instability, trauma, or immense loss. And in these moments of transition, supportive relationships can make all the difference.

That’s where people like Jenny come in.

The Human Side of Housing

Jenny serves as the Manager at Bethel Suites, and she lives onsite. That means the work she does is part of her daily life and the rhythm of the Bethel community itself.

Guests know that when they walk through the doors at Bethel Suites, they are treated with respect. Jenny helps make sure that Bethel Suites operates with efficiency and that every guest is treated with dignity. She advocates for guests when challenges inevitably crop up, helps coordinate transportation and social services, and builds relationships that foster trust and stability.

What Research Tells Us About Support and Housing Stability

A growing body of research shows that social support and engagement play a critical role in helping individuals and families successfully transition from homelessness to permanent housing.

Studies examining supportive and transitional housing programs consistently find that connection to staff, case managers, and community members improves outcomes such as housing stability, mental health, and employment.

  • Transitional housing programs report that 73%–86% of residents successfully exit into permanent housing, demonstrating the effectiveness of structured support during the transition period.

  • Housing assistance programs significantly reduce the likelihood of returning to homelessness; in one study, individuals who received housing support were over 20 percentage points less likely to return to homelessness within 18 months.

  • Research also shows that ongoing engagement with services—such as case management and supportive staff relationships—is positively correlated with successful exits into permanent housing.

Beyond measurable outcomes, social connection and friendship plays an important role in a person's well-being. Studies of supportive housing environments have found that programs intentionally designed to build community lead residents to report stronger confidence, increased participation in meaningful activities, and improved social connection with their neighbors.

The bottom line? Housing programs work best when they create both stability AND belonging.

Why Transitional Housing Matters in Livingston County

Transitional housing like Bethel Suites acts as a bridge, giving people in Livingston County time to stabilize, access resources, and prepare for a transition into long-term housing.

During this period, residents often focus on:

  • Securing employment or increasing income

  • Accessing healthcare or behavioral/mental health services

  • Establishing life skills and supportive daily routines

  • Strengthening social connections and deepening community ties

Without this supportive step, the move from homelessness directly into permanent housing can be overwhelming...sometimes to the point of emotional paralysis.

Transitional housing offers something invaluable: time, structure, and relationships that help people regain their footing.

The Quiet Work That Changes Lives

At Bethel Suites, our manager Jenny embodies this philosophy every day.

Whether Jenny is helping address a building maintenance issue, checking in with a guest who is having a difficult week, or advocating for someone navigating the complexities of housing systems, Jenny's presence at Bethel Suites is what transforms it from a housing building into a place where people are treated with dignity and care.

That kind of consistent, compassionate presence creates stability in ways that statistics alone can't communicate. Yes, housing is essential, but people are what truly make a place feel like home. And for many guests at Bethel Suites, Jenny is a steady part of that journey.

The transition from homelessness to stable housing requires a lot of help. It requires resources, community partnerships, and programs like Bethel Suites that provide safe housing and meaningful support.

But most importantly, it requires people who care.
